Ma première année à Montréal…

May 7, 2014

I feel that if this post were only a few weeks late then I could apologise for not having written in a while. But as it’s over a year since my last post it’s probably going to be easier to catch everyone up than to apologise about it!

Over the last year I’ve been up to a myriad of exciting musical endeavours and I’m hoping that come 2015 I’ll have an album for you all.

Around June/July I was really lucky to meet Barry Walsh and Tasso Argyrakos while I was working next door to their tattoo studio, Ink City North. At the time they were organising lots of in-store events and after hearing me practice they asked if I wanted to play a few tunes at their next soirée. I jumped at the opportunity as  I was growing weary of open mic night shenanigans, and so my first proper gig in Montreal was a show at Ink City North supporting reggae legend Vernon Maytone

995188_245401232280926_981327251_nA huge and heartfelt thanks has to also go out to Facteur Malice for the stunning photos she took of me at the show, it’s been nice to have some photographic evidence of me playing solo! ;)

Around the time I met the boys at Ink City North, I also began saving my tips from work and taking some guitar lessons with Mr Tim Dobby. This really helped improve my confidence and it was lovely to have someone other than a YouTube tutorial to direct all my musical questions at! I’m really hoping that you’ll all be able to hear my playing in my upcoming recordings and we’ll agree that my time with Tim was money well spent! ;) You can also listen to Tim’s delightfully pretentious band, Lakes of Canada, by hitting their name.

Between October and Christmas, most of my time was eaten up with my guitar lessons and with work. I dabbled in comedy for a brief time but I managed to get caught in some drama that made the whole thing infinitely less appealing and I refocused on making music my full time gig. However, during my brief flirt with comedy we were lucky enough to make a few good friends, one of them being the talented Kate Connor. After going to support Kate when she performed at The Wiggle Room for their weekly variety show Voix de Ville, I asked producer/co-host/all round comedic individual Paul Ash for a slot on the next show.

1524923_798212373529693_930283759_nVoix de Ville is a variety show with a “monarch of the mountain”  element thrown in for fun! At each show, all the acts are competing for crowd votes in order to win the grand prize of $100 and the honour to return the following week to defend their title. Guys, I won 4 weeks in a row! I really can’t express what a confidence boost that whole Wiggle Room experience was but I had a blast and I met some super awesome people, including everybody’s favourite republican Kitty Vanderbuilt & artist Salgood Sam who drew this awesome sketch of me performing! 1509207_279365172217865_1196964745_n

Still on a high from my run at The Wiggle Room I decided to pursue paid gigs more seriously in and around the city and to peace out open mics for a little while! The first of these was a slot at Bar de Courcelle, allbeit it was the middle of the Canadian winter and it wasn’t the busiest show I’ve ever played, it was a nice foot in the door and a nice reminder that I’ve still got it! ;) Since then I’ve had a couple of slots at Mad Hatters and I have more coming up later this month. (I’ll include a full list of upcoming shows in the side bar).

ALSO! I’m 996700_273240956163620_880675940_nashamed of myself for forgetting, Kayla and I got engaged on Christmas Eve, I suprised her with a beautiful ring made by Meshu which is essentially a map of where we met and all the places we went on our first date. I think she was suitably surprised and as it turned out she was also working on a surprise for me! I’m the proud owner of a Taylor 214-ce and he sounds beautiful and he looks nice and he’s full size. Perfect! If you’d like to see a video of Kayla surprising me you can click here.1013879_322586747895707_3990364219904216166_n

Anyway, back to the chronological order of things! I’ve had a really exciting year, and I feel like I’ve managed to build a wee Canadian fanbase for myself. I was delighted with my recent placing in the Cult MTL - Best of Montreal readers poll this month which I feel also proves that I’ve been adopted as an honorary Montrealer by everyone here! ;) I couldn’t ask for a better result than coming 3rd place to Leonard Cohen!

I think that brings us up to date! A year is a long time though, and surely I’ve forgotten to mention some stuff/people along the way! If you feel that you’ve been overlooked lemme know and I’ll apologise profusely!

I’m still plodding along trying to write a song per week. I think I’m starting to get a better grip of Logic Pro, but it’s pretty extensive software and I doubt I’ll ever fully understand it’s capabilities unless I spent the time properly studying it. Basically I’ve decided that sound engineers are amazing amazing people and deserve all my admiration and respect because I’ve tried (and failed miserably) to do their job!

That being said, it’s nice to be able to get my musical ideas out and do a little bit of editing!

My tune from last week ’14′-

I think is the most simple and poignant song I’ve written since this time last year when I wrote my EP. I’m glad to be going back to my roots and simplifying everything. This song just ran out me, I think in the end I actually wrote the whole thing in a day and then recorded it the following morning. I’m pretty chuffed with it if I’m honest!
This weeks tune, ‘The Tin Man’-

This bad boy was a completely different kettle of fish. I can’t say it’s particularly similar to anything else I’ve ever written… Even the lyrics aren’t very ‘me’… But I did write it, and I like it enough. I think I bear a grudge because I found it a really difficult song to write. I didn’t feel like I could find any of myself in it, so I don’t know that I really managed to do it the justice it deserved… You can listen and decide for yourself if you like it. Kayla loves it, and she seems to be my muse so that must count for something! ;)

Bedroom Demos

January 23, 2013

Hello friends!

I got a beautiful audio interface for Christmas and I’ve been trying to get to grips with it and Logic. (It’s all very complicated and I find it really difficult!)

But here’s my first two attempts at recording myself in my bedroom, and I hope you enjoy them.

This is the first one I did, and admittedly I did such a bad job that I had to try and tidy it up after I had posted it. But it’s not a half bad attempt and it’s nice to hear my progress.

This is the latest track I’ve done, and a much better attempt than I Haven’t Slept For Days, although I’m still finding the whole process perplexing to say the least!

Enjoy!

2012

January 1, 2013

Ok, every year my girlfriend fills in this questionnaire, I thought it was a cool idea so I’m copying her.

1. What did you do in 2012 that you’d never done before?
*I wrote my first solo ep! All songs entirely by me.
*I moved to a new country.
*I bought my first electric guitar. (I had an Aria before, but my Dad bought him and Arias don’t count…)
*I went to London.

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I didn’t really make a new years’ resolution last year, I think it should have been something like “be happier” which I did and am still doing.
I did promise myself in 2011 that I would work my socks off on my solo music, and if I didn’t feel I’d made an improvement within a year that I’d call it quits and go be something real- like a lawyer. One EP later I don’t think I need to hang up my guitar just yet!

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Probably… If I don’t remember who then I’ll probably get a hard time… I can’t remember visiting any babies… One of Kayla’s best friends had a beautiful baby boy called Zac, he’s fucking awesome. He’s got loads of chat and he likes my accent. His Mum & Dad are sound too.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
One great-aunt died, I think that would be the closest person… Although the deaths of Donna Summer, Chuck Brown and Whitney Houston effected us all I’m sure.

5. What countries did you visit?
Here we go…
Scotland
England
France
Belgium
The Netherlands
Germany
Austria
Czech Republic
Switzerland
Italy
Monaco
Luxembourg
Canada

6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?
A Canadian visa, and kick ass guitar skills!

7. What date(s) from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
January 16th – the night I met Kayla Hillier… I thought she was really really weird.
June 25th-September 3rd – Our absolutely amazing European adventure!
September 9th – Arriving in Canada.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting my shit together and getting out of Edinburgh.
Writing my EP.
Dying my hair pink on my own with no help.

9. What was your biggest failure?
In all honesty I think my failures this year were minute in comparison to previous years, so it’s probably not worth dwelling on them!

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I thought I had Legionnaires’ disease at one point! Thankfully I didn’t, I just had a chest infection and a stomach bug at the same time. Other than that I’ve been surprisingly healthy!

11. What was the best thing you bought?
The trip to Europe.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
This is an odd question… Probably Kayla, she’s been very patient. She keeps me sane, and helps me keep perspective.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and/or depressed?
Ha! The occasional arsehole here and there, but no one I’d want to bitch about over the internet.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Travelling! That’s where I’ve spent every penny of my money this year and it was totally worth it!!

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Europe! and Canada!

16. What song(s) will always remind you of 2012?
Any track on my EP.
Any track by Anais Mitchell, I was playing her music pretty hardcore when we were travelling.
Any thing by Freddie King.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?
Definitely happier.

ii. thinner or fatter?
Probably fatter. Canada is ruining my figure!

iii. richer or poorer?
I’m probably a wee bit richer, but that’s not cause I’m loaded it’s just because I was so bad with my money this time last year!

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
I wish I’d written more, other than that it’s been a pretty full year and I don’t feel like I did anything by halves.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Stressing. The start of 2012 I was a total nutcase and I was stressed all the time. I’m pretty calm now and it’s a nice change. It’s almost like I’ve matured…

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Oh! was I supposed to have done this before New Years? Oops! Well I spent Christmas in Windsor with Kayla’s family. Her Mum was a total legend and got me loads of stuff, including these really epic Canada mittens that I’m never taking off. (You should be impressed with how eloquent my typing is despite massive mittens!)

21. Did you fall in love in 2012?
Yes. I wholeheartedly fell in love.

22. What was your favorite TV program?
Game of Thrones, True Blood, Brothers & Sisters, Community… OH! I watched all of Roseanne from beginning to end and it was amazing!

23. What was the best book you read?
I read some books that Kayla recommended to me. I read The Shadow of the Wind, and Under the Banner of Heaven. They were both pretty cool. On the whole though I haven’t read as much as I would have liked to…

24. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Anais Mitchell
Freddie King

25. What did you want and get?
I wanted to be happier, I am.

26. What did you want and not get?
I wanted an Epiphone ES335 in seafoam, I got a Squier Telecaster in blonde. You win some, you lose some.

27. What was your favorite film of this year?
Kayla and I have been watching all the Oscar nominations, so I’ve seen some seriously incredible films this year. I really enjoyed The Perks of Being a Wallflower though, as cheery as it is!

28. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were ya?
I turned 21! I went to England for the first time! I went to Manchester and London. I discovered Englishmen don’t get my humour and don’t find me funny! However English women think I’m really funny and I don’t know why they bother dating Englishmen! Weird.

29. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
If I had moved fast enough to sort out my Canadian visa before coming to Canada, cause now I have to go back to Scotland and then come back to Canada again!

30. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?
I think I finally realised that I’m gay, so if I look gay, that’s ok. Because I’m gay. Does that make sense? So I stopped worrying if I looked feminine and started just wearing things I find comfortable.

31. What kept you sane?
Kayla Hillier.

32. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Roseanne Barr… then I followed her on twitter and realised she was a heedcase! So I’ll say Beth Ditto, whom I followed on twitter and she followed me back! (I’m a wee bit of a chubby chaser…)

33. Who did you miss?
I miss my friend Kieran. I’ve spoken to him more this year, but that really just reminds me what an incredible person he is and how I wish I could see him more often.

34. Who was the best new person you met?
Kayla Hillier and numerous other people associated to her!

35. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012?
Fuck Scotland, it’s shite. If you’re not happy pack your bags and fuck off. Fact!
